Sophia Innih-Mbakwe is a distinguished Nigerian oil and gas executive with over 30 years of progressive experience spanning upstream operations, law, government relations, and corporate strategy. A transformational leader within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), she currently serves as Executive Vice President, Business Services, where she oversees key corporate functions that drive business efficiency and strategic alignment across the enterprise.
Sophia has been instrumental in several high-impact initiatives that have shaped Nigeria’s energy landscape. As Senior Business Adviser to the Executive Vice President, Upstream, she enhanced operational performance, strengthened stakeholder engagement, and championed host community development initiatives in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021. Her leadership contributed significantly to the successful operationalization of the 2024 Production War Room, enabling Nigeria to achieve a national crude oil production milestone of 2 million barrels per day by December 2024.
As the pioneer Managing Director of NNPC Energy Services Ltd (EnServ), Sophia led diverse teams across exploration, drilling, and engineering disciplines—driving efficiency, expanding frontier exploration in the Middle Benue Trough and Chad Basin, and boosting national reserves and production capacity.
Earlier in her career, she served as Group General Manager, Supply Chain Management, where she reformed procurement processes, supported major projects, and played a central role in the NNPC Rebranding Initiative, which culminated in the unveiling of NNPC Limited in July 2022. She also made history as the first female Managing Director of Antan Producing Ltd, where she advanced operational performance and gender inclusion in the upstream sector.
Beyond her corporate achievements, Sophia is deeply committed to humanitarian service. She sits on the Board of Trustees of SCORE Charity and serves as an adviser to several civil rights and community development organizations, reflecting her enduring commitment to social impact and inclusive growth.
Sophia holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) degree with First Class Honours from Edo State University, Ekpoma (1992) and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1993 after completing her studies at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos.
