Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, Mayor of Freetown since 2018, is a finance professional turned politician leading a transformation agenda focused on resilience, human development, and urban mobility. With over 25 years of experience in strategic planning, risk management, and project management, she prioritizes community ownership, transparency, and data-driven decision-making.
Her leadership during Sierra Leone’s Ebola response earned her an Ebola Gold Medal and an OBE. Previously, she worked in the UK financial services industry, specializing in risk management and corporate governance. A Chartered Accountant, she holds degrees from the London School of Economics and Fourah Bay College. She has been recognized by Time magazine’s Time100 Next list and BBC 100 Women.
